Speaker: Rich Van Pelt

Rich Van Pelt is a forty-year veteran of youth and family ministry who communicates with warmth and passion to students, educators, professional counselors, youth workers and parents.  He is recognized internationally for his expertise in the area of responding to kids in crisis. He is the author of five books (Intensive Care, The Youth Worker’s/Parent’s/Volunteer’s Guide to Helping Teenagers in Crisis series, and the forthcoming Teenager’s Guide to Helping Friends in Crisis). Rich travels the world advocating for poor children and families as Senior Director of Ministry Relationships and Partner Development with Compassion International.

 You will learn:
  • How to create safe places to talk about unsafe things.
  • How to eliminate bullying and reduce gossip and social exclusion.
  • How to forge partnerships with teenagers, parents, schools, law enforcement and other adults to extend the safety zone beyond your reach.
  • Biblically-rooted principles, daily practices and durable resources for helping kids and families respond to big (and not-so-big but still important) crisis issues.
  • How to get a kid help without leaving them feeling abandoned.
  • How appropriate humor, empathy, availability, training and a servant spirit combine to make you the kind of youth worker teenagers believe is safe.
