For the past two decades, inspiration Point has been intentionally engaged in the training of young adults. In the past, the formal aspect of this training has been specifically for those who are serving on summer staff. CheckPoint is designed to build on that training, and extend it for an entire school year.

CheckPoint Overview

CheckPoint is a program for young adults ages 18 – 25. It is designed to give participants one year to study God’s word, learn leadership and to develop ministry skills. It is a great opportunity for young adults to establish Godly patterns for and set the trajectory of their life as they move forward. The purpose of the program is to train young adults for ministry and leadership, and to help them develop critical life and ministry skills. While the program is a part of the ministry of Inspiration Point Christian Camp and Conference Center, the program does not deal exclusively or specifically with the ministry of Christian camping. Rather, the ministry at Inspiration Point serves as a field in which leadership, ministry and life skills can be developed. The goal is that young adults will develop skills that are transferrable to other life and ministry situations. The participation in ministry at Inspiration Point will also serve as a catalyst for discussion about issues related to serving others.

CheckPoint exists in three phases:

  • The first phase begins in September and continues through May. (Note: for those who are entering CheckPoint that have not served on Inspiration Point summer staff prior to application, CheckPoint would begin with Summer Staff training in May.) Phase 1 is the part of the program where the bulk of the teaching takes place. Teaching will be centered on five core themes: Biblical study and Christian Foundations, Worldview and Culture, Leadership, Ministry Skills and Service.
  • The second phase is the summer (late May through August). CheckPointers will serve in a variety of ministry positions on summer staff. The intent is that this will give them an opportunity to use the ministry and leadership skills in a familiar environment where they are mentored on a daily basis.
  • The third phase takes place following the summer staff experience. As CheckPointers will be heading off in many directions (some to school and others to work etc.) we will help them find a congregation in which to serve in ministry. These ministry positions may be part time, full time or volunteer. Depending on the extent of the CheckPointer’s involvement, congregations may be able to assist with housing and/or living expenses. During this time, CheckPointers will be mentored by CheckPoint staff throughout the year and will return to Inspiration Point periodically throughout phase 3 for “CheckPoint Check-Up” seminars. These are intended to touch base with CheckPointers and to explore how the study of leadership and ministry applies to their current ministry situations.

Note: in the past, some CheckPointers have gone to college, some have taken on full-time employment and others have entered full-time or part-time ministry positions. But all of them have become involved in congregational ministry in significant ways. That is the intent of Phase 3.
